If you get the newsletter, you’ll recognise the quote from The Mapmaker Chronicles on this page.
It’s my friend Kelly Exeter’s favourite quote from The Mapmaker Chronicles: Race To The End Of The World – she tells me that when she saw the bit about redheads being good luck, she laughed and laughed. (What can I say? I’ve got to get the message across wherever I can…)
Speaking of the book, I loved this post by Sonia from Life Love and Hiccups about encouraging kids to read. A recent US survey showed that kids would definitely read more books if they could find books they liked – check out the link for a terrific infographic summary of the survey results, which is particularly interesting if you’re interested in writing for kids as well.
My theory with the boys has always just been to throw heaps and heaps of different types of books in their direction to help them find out what works. They have different tastes – Mr7 loves a good ‘fact’ book, while Mr10 loves fantasy and adventure – but there are tried-and-true books they both love (Horrible Histories, Harry Potter, The Ranger’s Apprentice, and comics, comics, comics, for starters). And I’m pretty sure that if I created a ‘book nook’, such as those suggested by Sonia, I’d never, ever get them out of it.
My best Christmas present so far has been the news that The Mapmaker Chronicles has been reprinted for the second time. Clearly Santa thinks I’ve been very nice this year (and let’s not dissuade him of that fact, shall we?). Or that whole ‘red hair is good luck’ thing is more than fiction…
